{"id":7036,"date":"2011-06-05T17:22:25","date_gmt":"2011-06-05T21:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/?p=7036"},"modified":"2011-06-06T07:23:22","modified_gmt":"2011-06-06T11:23:22","slug":"john-schmitt-at-rockwood-music-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opticality.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/john-schmitt-at-rockwood-music-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"John Schmitt at Rockwood Music Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even though it\u2019s only been a few weeks since we last saw <a title=\"John Schmitt\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/johnschmitt\" target=\"_blank\">John Schmitt<\/a> perform (May 13th at <a title=\"The Living Room\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livingroomny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Living Room<\/a>), we were really looking forward to this show last night. The set at The Living Room was excellent, which is reason enough to want more. But <a title=\"Rockwood Music Hall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwoodmusichall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rockwood Music Hall<\/a> is also more intimate which in itself was a draw.<\/p>\n<p>John delivered a completely satisfying experience (to high expectations!). He had a few surprises for us as well (another great reason to go see your favorite artists often).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/JohnSchmittSinging.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"JohnSchmittSinging\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/JohnSchmittSinging_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"JohnSchmittSinging\" width=\"183\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can read a number of my posts about John. Here are the key facts that you\u2019ll learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>he has a <strong>wonderful<\/strong> voice<\/li>\n<li>he plays guitar <strong>wonderfully<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>he writes <strong>exceptional<\/strong> songs (OK, I should have said <strong>wonderful<\/strong> songs, to stick with the theme) <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile6.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/><\/li>\n<li>he has many talented musical buddies (both genders), who are only too happy to make music with him<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of those were in play last night, including John selecting an excellent set list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/JohnSchmittGuitar.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"JohnSchmittGuitar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/JohnSchmittGuitar_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"JohnSchmittGuitar\" width=\"171\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He played two songs solo, at least two with one female guest (two different women, we\u2019ll get to them shortly) and the rest with a full band (which also had a surprise guest).<\/p>\n<p>First, the band:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pasquale Chieffalo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/pasqualechieffalo\" target=\"_blank\">Pasquale Chieffalo<\/a> on electric bass. John joked on stage that I would have to work extra-hard to figure out the correct spelling of Pasquale\u2019s name. He was right, but he was also wrong, because I gave up pretty quickly and just shot John a message and he gave it to me, so I cheated. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile6.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/> Last night, I quipped back that I would just describe Pasquale as \u201cThe tall bass player\u201d. Man, he is tall. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-smile6.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/PasqualeChieffalo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"PasqualeChieffalo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/PasqualeChieffalo_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PasqualeChieffalo\" width=\"128\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>None of that is important, of course. The fact that Pasquale played really well and was at exactly the right volume is all that mattered. He played the bass on John\u2019s CD, Ophelia, which we <strong>love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the songs that John played solo was called \u201cMe and the Chief\u201d. He <em>claims<\/em> that it\u2019s about his grandfather, but now that I see how to spell Pasquale\u2019s last name, I\u2019m less convinced. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile6.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Ryan Vaughn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/ryanvaughnmusic\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Vaughn<\/a> on drums. I just praised Ryan\u2019s drumming last week when he played with <a title=\"Robbie Gil\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robbiegil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robbie Gil<\/a>. That was a louder, more upbeat set, and required a different kind of drumming. Obviously, Ryan handled the switch in styles last night extremely well (he\u2019s one of the top NY-based drummers). Also the right volume (I mention it as a contrast to the drummer the set before, who was good, but too loud).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/RyanVaughn.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"RyanVaughn\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/RyanVaughn_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"RyanVaughn\" width=\"211\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Matt Simons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/mattsimons\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Simons<\/a> was a special guest on two songs, playing the saxophone! I pretty much like everything Matt Simons does, but from the first time I ever saw him play sax with the <a title=\"Greg Mayo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gregmayo.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Mayo<\/a> Band, I knew that my softest spot for him would likely come whenever he broke out the sax. It was a complete surprise to see him play it with John.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MattSimonsSaxophone.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"MattSimonsSaxophone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MattSimonsSaxophone_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"MattSimonsSaxophone\" width=\"130\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>John was very generous in giving Matt multiple long leads, and Matt nailed every one of them. Kudos and Bravo! Needless to say, the sax was well-matched to both songs that John invited him up for, the second of which was You Got Me Brother.<\/p>\n<p>On to the ladies:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Karly Jurgensen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.karlyjurgensen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karly Jurgensen<\/a> was invited up to sing two songs with John. The first was Evangeline, a cover of a version of the song performed by The Band with special guest star Emmylou Harris (in 1976!). If you haven\u2019t guessed yet, Karly played the part of Emmylou Harris. John performed the role of \u201cThe Band\u201d, since he gave <em>his band<\/em> the song off (he\u2019s generous like that). <strong>Lovely<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/KarlyJurgensen.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"KarlyJurgensen\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/KarlyJurgensen_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"KarlyJurgensen\" width=\"209\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second song was Ophelia, the title track of John\u2019s CD (this time <em>his band<\/em> played as well). On this song Karly\u2019s part doesn\u2019t come in until nearly the end, when she sings \u201cAdieu Love\u201d quite a number of times, in harmony with John, but also while John sings some other lines.<\/p>\n<p>John just <a title=\"John Schmitt Live at the Auburn Public Theatre\" href=\"http:\/\/johnschmitt.bandcamp.com\/album\/18-years-today-john-schmitt-live-at-the-auburn-public-theatre\" target=\"_blank\">released a live CD<\/a> (pay what you will, so I advise you to pay <strong>a lot<\/strong>). <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile6.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/> Ophelia on that CD (which you can stream for free) has both <a title=\"Chris Ayer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/chrisayer\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Ayer<\/a> and Julia Poorman singing along. In that version, Chris speaks to the audience (at the 1:18 mark) saying: \u201cI promise I\u2019m going to sing at some point\u201d. I note that because Karly was much more patient and simply waited for the end of the song to do her part. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile6.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: two people independently reached out privately to me to say that Chris would never be so rude as to talk during John&#8217;s song. One of them noted it was John who said &#8220;I promise <strong><em>they&#8217;re<\/em><\/strong> going to sing at some point&#8221;. It never occured to me that Chris was bring rude. Depending on how the show was going, previous banter with the audience and between them, I assumed (incorrectly) that he was being particularly funny. There was a wink at the end of the above paragraph, but I know not everyone trusts a winking man. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>A little later on, John called up another female guest star.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lissa Farquhar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/lissafarquhar\" target=\"_blank\">Lissa Farquhar<\/a> joined him to sing Going Back. In addition to singing beautiful harmony, Lissa sang lead as well. She then sang fantastic harmony on Ave Regina (what a wonderful song).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/LissaFarquharJohnSchmittHarmony.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"LissaFarquharJohnSchmittHarmony\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/LissaFarquharJohnSchmittHarmony_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"LissaFarquharJohnSchmittHarmony\" width=\"240\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>John is one of the more consistent performers of the (way too many) ones that we follow.<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
