I\u2019ve been waiting a while to catch Abby again (schedules didn\u2019t overlap). I\u2019ve only seen one full set and while I enjoyed it, I had a few complaints about the technical side of the show (mostly volume).<\/p>\n<p>I am so glad that I trusted my instinct that Abby is a talent that I should follow, because I was right! <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/wlEmoticon-smile1.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPayne.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"AbbyPayne\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPayne_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"AbbyPayne\" width=\"141\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last night Abby had only a trio (including herself) and that made all the difference. Let me repeat the three things I knew about Abby before yesterday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She\u2019s a superb keyboard player<\/li>\n<li>She has a lovely voice<\/li>\n<li>She writes catchy songs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What I didn\u2019t know were whether the lyrics would grab me. They did! Abby has a really good flair for story telling. The volume in the last show made it hard to listen, last night, no issues!<\/p>\n<p>Abby played only the grand piano, whereas the last time she was exclusively on electronic keyboards. For every keyboard player, I typically prefer the sound of the grand, when they are good at it, and Abby is very good!<\/p>\n<p>Abby dismissed the band for two songs which she played back-to-back (taking no break between). She did a terrific job. While her band enhances her sound a lot, she can easily handle a solo show<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPaynePiano.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"AbbyPaynePiano\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPaynePiano_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"AbbyPaynePiano\" width=\"223\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting Abby, left-to-right:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rob Pawlings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/robpawlings\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Pawlings<\/a> on electric bass. Rob was absolutely incredible. I\u2019ve seen Rob once before, as part of <a title=\"The Thang Band\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thethangband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Thang Band<\/a>, where I also had only superlatives for his performance. Given that this was a trio, Rob carried a lot of weight and he never spilled a drop of water all the way up the hill. He sang a bit, but mostly too far from the mic to really be heard. I heard him sing with The Thang Band and praised him that night, so he should bother to step up to the mic next time he sings with Abby as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RobPawlings.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"RobPawlings\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RobPawlings_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"RobPawlings\" width=\"201\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPayneRobPawlings.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"AbbyPayneRobPawlings\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/AbbyPayneRobPawlings_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"AbbyPayneRobPawlings\" width=\"240\" height=\"202\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kenny Shaw\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/kenny1shaw\" target=\"_blank\">Kenny Shaw<\/a> on drums. Once again, Kenny delivered a thrilling performance (not that he ever misses). Like with Rob above, the drums were such a critical part of the sound of the trio. Even the slower numbers had very driving beats which Kenny nailed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/KennyShaw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"KennyShaw\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/KennyShaw_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"KennyShaw\" width=\"161\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/KennyShawDrums.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"KennyShawDrums\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opticality.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/KennyShawDrums_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"KennyShawDrums\" width=\"192\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We happened to sit at the same table with Kenny\u2019s parents who made a long trek to see Kenny play in back-to-back shows (we had plans and couldn\u2019t head over to see Hurrah a Bolt of Light at <a title=\"Mercury Lounge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mercuryloungenyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury Lounge<\/a>).
